We were the first Optometry practice in Hastings back in 1906, we have many 'firsts' to our credit, and we continue to be 'first' today. We were the first Optometry practice in Hastings back in 1906, being quick to restore services following complete destruction in both the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake and some years later a major fire. We are one of the last practices to maintain an in house spectacle making workshop, which means we can still do all the difficult repairs and fast spectacle making within 2 hrs. We were the first to provide weekend services, and are the largest practice in the region with 4 full time optometrists providing service for ACC Primary Eyecare. If you have a sore eye and need eye examination in a hurry, we are always ready for you. Our prices for quality have always been good and if you want better quality, then be assured, Shattky's use the finest quality that others cannot obtain. We have had more than 1,00 fashion frames on display since 1980, and we just love the constant stream of latest fashion styles coming into us every day! Our relationship with the people of Hawkes Bay has always been one of dedicated service and affordable quality, perhaps you have tried us already?.

Graduated from Auckland School of Optometry in 1977 with Diploma in Optometry. I have driven the Excellence of our practice all my career, and we have won many highly esteemed awards in the Hawkes Bay region. My particular interests are in children with learning disabilities, adults with Visual Perceptual difficulties due to Acquired Brain Injuries and local sportsmen women who seek the winning edge. became National Director for Irlen in New Zealand. He brought over 20 years experience as principal of a number of New Zealand schools and founder of Kip McGrath Education Centres NZ Ltd. He is an Irlen Diagnostician and Trainer for all Screeners and Diagnosticians in NZ. Also in the early 1990's a Hawke's Bay school teacher, Jill Stansfield, at Parkvale School in Hastings, trained as an Irlen Screener a person who uses questionnaires and Coloured Overlays to find those patients who would be likely to benefit from tinted lenses . In our region there are now a number of Irlen Screeners, many of them teachers like Jill with a special interest in helping children to read. I am assisted by 2 In House screeners Michelle and Marie and other screeners in the community Mark Cooper at Kip McGrath Hastings and Nerine Ehlers at SPARKS in Napier. It is a great pity that so many children are struggling to read, for want of this therapy.
Uptake by the schools of NZ has been generally weak, though there is an increasing awareness that time spent addressing Irlen needs before commencing Reading Recovery and Individualised reading assistance is
